Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine
Live Exports: Discussion
Mr. Seamus Scallan:
Mr. Doyle will be able to tell the committee members about the market system, how many calves are coming onto the market, etc. That is his field. Something needs to be done with the calves coming onto the market now because they are not wanted in Ireland. We have to find a way to deal with that. Something should have been put in place already. I went to the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and explained that this problem was coming. I have told the Department and everybody else that this problem was coming since October. I feel that because we have had no representation as a body of exporters we could not get anything done. If we had been standing as one, perhaps we would have been able to achieve something. The problem is on top of us now and we must organise to get something done very fast.
