Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine

Impact of Brexit on the Agrifood Sector

4:50 pm

Ms Patricia Callan:

Absolutely. It has serious decisions to make. For many food companies, it depends on where one one's market is and if one can diversify. Most businesses, however, do not approach it from that viewpoint. The United Kingdom is a profitable market in which they are ingrained. They ask us how they can protect what they have and grow that market. The question is from where one would supply it. The difference in the case of spirits and geographical indications is that there is no option, one has to make it on the island of Ireland. There is unique protection, which is why the laws on it are most important.
