If the patients have been untreated, there is a likelihood that the infection might still be active, which is why they are treated with the antibiotics. After a course of antibiotics where it is neurological, which involves a period of at least four weeks, the assumption is that the infection will be cured. Not all symptoms will resolve and there can be some permanent damage that will not be reversed.
