Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health

Hospital Services: Discussion (Resumed)

9:00 am

Mr. Martin Varley:

To add to what Deputy Durkan has said, the capacity review was commissioned and delivered earlier this year. The national development plan built on that and provided the funding. What we are asking for now is an action plan so that we will know we will have X number of additional beds each year in the future. Based on historical performance, it takes up to seven years to commission and put in place a bed in the health service. If we do not get the annual commissioning plans at this point we will all be retired before we see any real exercise of putting beds in place, at a time when we have 700,000 patients waiting for care.
