Legal Services Regulatory Authority: Discussion

9:00 am

Dr. Brian Doherty:

I would not wish to presume what evidence we will ultimately gather in respect of the section 34 report into education and training. We have attempted to get as broad a perspective as possible, including in the public consultation to which we had 35 responses from different organisations. We have also sought the experience of trainee solicitors and barristers as well as the masters in that relationship. We are seeking their input to see what possible difficulties there may be at that point of their career. When we report under section 34 in September we are required by statute to make recommendations on any issues we identify that may be remedied. It is our intention, as we stated in the strategic report, to do a broad and comprehensive analysis of legal education and training, including the issue of access that Deputy Wallace raised, and to make recommendations to the Minister on 30 September.
