Committee on Budgetary Oversight

Priorities for Budget 2019: Discussion

4:00 pm

Mr. Neil McDonnell:

We understand there are different philosophies throughout the House on how to borrow, tax and spend. The important issue for us from a fiscal point of view is none of the Deputies will have any choice about what they will spend when the next recession comes. We are excessively borrowed as we are at €200 million, and after Japan we are the second most indebted country on a per capitabasis. It does not matter what party they are in, Deputies will not have that money to spend when the next recession comes, and it is a matter of opinion as to when it is going to come.
