Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health

Cancer Screening Programmes: Discussion

9:00 am

Professor Arnold Hill:

That is not true. As I explained, the person will present to the symptomatic service and I or one of the other 26 breast surgeons in the country will meet that patient. If the person has had a mammogram the previous year we always ask if she would like to have it reviewed. In the vast majority of cases they do not. It is very rare. I see 400 patients with breast cancer each year and only a small number opt for a review of their mammogram. It is not their focus.
