Tackling Childhood Obesity: Discussion (Resumed)

9:30 am

Dr. Cathal McCrory:

We have to get into homes. We have to work both within schools and homes. The evidence available internationally suggests either/or is not as effective as the two together. I refer to the interventions made here with Food Dudes and Super Troopers. There should also be an attempt to get into the home to affect parents' behaviour to make them aware of childhood overweight and obesity problems. Many are not even aware that there is a problem. We have to make them aware of their own overweight or obese status. As the Chairman said, he was not aware of his own BMI until he calculated it. It has to a whole family unit intervention; therefore, it cannot be either/or.
