Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health

Business of Joint Committee
Foetal Anti-Convulsant Syndrome: Discussion

9:00 am

Dr. John Murphy:

The relevant people have had experience in the United Kingdom. Certainly geneticists have been involved there. The committee could inquire into that. However, I think the point my colleague is making is that there is a major human element is all of this and these children would have to be seen by specialists in Ireland. We do not want these children going somewhere in the United Kingdom. That would be very disruptive for the children and the families. Whatever happens should be done in our country. Then the individual who is seeing these children can make directions about how best they should be treated in future. The key thing is to look after these children in the best way possible.
