We have written to the commissioner through the clerk asking that she might update us on the job of work she is undertaking in respect of what is alleged as a data breach at Independent News and Media, INM. I do not wish her to go beyond what she would want to say here in respect of the fact that this is before the courts. We have grave concerns about the potential impact that any data breach might have on the work of journalism and specifically the impact on the importance of journalistic sources. Can the commissioner identify for us if she thinks there is any weakness in the law? Does she believe the law needs to be updated? Does she think her office needs greater powers to ensure this and to address what appears to be a lacuna in the law here, if such exists?
