Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs

Cybersecurity for Children and Young Adults: Discussion (Resumed)

9:30 am

Ms Muireann Whelan:

I completely agree with 14 year olds being allowed a smartphone if they have been brought up knowing the laws, knowing what to do and knowing how to use it safely. The Internet can be such an amazing thing for everyone but the problem is how to monitor it. That is up to parents. If parents give their children under the age of 14, for example, a smartphone and they get into trouble sexting, it is the parents' choice.
