Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs

Cybersecurity for Children and Young Adults: Discussion (Resumed)

9:30 am

Ms Niamh Sweeney:

If I may, I will comment on the same issue before the conversation moves on in case we do not get a chance to return to it.

Everything Ms de Bailliencourt said is correct. I also stress that we have extensive controls in place for advertising. While an advertisement will be served to a user based on some of his or her preferences or what has been worked out as being most relevant to him or her, users can opt out of this feature, which is known as online behavioural advertising. We allow users to control the things they would like to be served or they can opt out of it altogether. This does not mean that he or she will not be served an advertisement but that the advertisement will not be based on any of the user's online activity or preferences. I want to make clear that this opt-out feature is available to everybody and that there are elements that are within each user's control.

Facebook is governed by the data protection directive which will be replaced by the general data protection regulation in May 2018. We are working hard to ensure we will be ready for the changes. We are working very closely with the regulator on the issue.
