I am not sure why the practice referred to by the Senator stopped. I could hazard a guess. The Senator would probably come up with the same answer. I would say it was a cultural thing. I recall standing up at the end of the cinema. The national anthem used to be broadcast by RTÉ, which had just one channel at the time, at the end of the day's television programming.
