Committee on Public Petitions

English Junior Certificate Examination: Discussion

1:30 pm

Ms Tara O'Sullivan:

I thought it was an amazing law in that when I was researching how to submit a petition, and I got an email from the committee about official submitting it, which was great, I found that 1,000 signatures were collected in America and 10,000 in England. In Ireland we need one, which is an amazing facility that not many people know about. It suits Ireland very well in that we have such a small population but it is amazing that we are able to give such a direct input. Voting is amazing and it has all these knock-on effects but sometimes it is difficult, especially for young people, to see the direct effect of voting for a certain person and how that plays out. However, a petition is very specific and we were able to ask for help on an issue that directly affected us.
