General Scheme of Road Traffic (Fixed Penalty - Drink Driving) Bill 2017: Discussion (Resumed)

1:40 pm

Mr. Padraig Cribben:

The Deputy made a good point about young people drinking. In essence, that is referred to in the trade as the lost generation. Young people, by and large, do not drink in pubs. They drink at home. As someone said earlier, they drink in situations where measures are not counted. That makes it all the more surprising that some, including the Minister, are against the Public Health (Alcohol) Bill, which is designed to reduce the availability of cheap alcohol, which is the source of a lot of the drink that is being used by young people before they drive.
