Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach

Banking Sector in Ireland: Ulster Bank

9:30 am

Mr. Andrew Blair:

In regard to our needs to build the business for the future, we did not have the opportunity to dispose of loans to NAMA so our need was to sort out that problem for ourselves. We wanted to build a business that was sustainable. We wanted to build a business for our staff and our customers that would be able to grow in the future. That is why we set about trying to reduce the impact on our balance sheet of non-performing loans. In our case, the way for us to achieve that same disposal of assets that was available to others via NAMA we conducted it ourselves.
