In 2013, Mr. Boland stated:

My concern was for the reputation of Waterford, given all the other things that were happening. I had a fairly lengthy meeting with the then president and he was adamant - I had no way of knowing otherwise - that he had no case to answer and that all of the expenditure was entirely appropriate.
