Special Needs Provision in Second Level Schools: SNPA, NCSE and NAPD

1:30 pm

Mr. Teresa Maher:

I have an idea of what we mean by equal. When Killian was going to school, he was not the same as his peers. He knew it and we knew it. It is rough. I will read out something I got from Facebook. This is what equal is: for those who are tall, they get a small box to stand on; for those who are middling, they get a middling box to stand on; and for those who are quite short, they get an incredibly large box to stand on. That is part of the idea of it not being a matter of one size fitting all. Would mainstream secondary education suit every child who is profoundly deaf with an intellectual disability and Down's syndrome? The answer is "No". However, for those who it does suit, please leave the doors open and give them every support they need.
