Committee of Inquiry into the Banking Crisis

Nexus Phase

Mr. Brian Cowen:

Well, I'm answering you this way, Chairman, and trying to be fair to everybody. As of that night, I don't question the good faith of everyone who was working on behalf of the country that night to do they best they could in the circumstances. And we can have criticisms of me and everyone else afterwards, I don't mind that, that's life, that's the way life goes. But what the point I'm making to you is, that when we sent in people after the night to look at it, they came back to us after looking at it for weeks and said what they said, that it was okay until 2011 at least. So, you know, that was wrong too because the situation ... that's what happens in a crisis, it moves and takes on a life of its own and you don't know where it's going to end. You have to take judgments and you have to make calls, and you do the best you can if you're given the responsibility of making those decisions. All I'm saying is that everyone in there who was trying to make that decision was trying to do the best they could for the country. I can assure you that.
