Committee of Inquiry into the Banking Crisis

Context Phase

2:05 am

Mr. Peter Nyberg:

I do not see any conflict at all. What now seems very difficult to understand and condone was something which was very widely seen as absolutely normal behaviour at the time, not only by the banks themselves but by observers. One sign of the lack of bad intent, if I should put it like that, is that very many banking executives lost not only their jobs because of the mistakes made but they had taken out loans to buy real estate and they had taken out loans to buy shares in their own banks which they obviously believed in.
