Most of the debate on reducing expenditure has focused on the large spending Departments, namely, Social Protection, Health and Education and Skills. However, even though the interest on the national debt is in the order of €8 billion or €9 billion, there is never the same level of debate on that issue in the Chamber, primarily because those payments are made out of the Central Fund and are not expenditure that is voted through the Oireachtas.
