Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation

Business Closures and Job Losses: Discussion with National Off-Licence Association

2:50 pm

Mr. Jim McCabe:

We are not here to say one should bring in this or that. In a way we are pointing out what would happen if one did bring it in. All we are saying is that minimum pricing is not the big answer we are looking for and neither is below-cost selling because at the end of the day people can get around below-cost selling. It is a start and what will happen with below-cost selling, for example, is that retailers cannot reclaim the VAT. At least that is something that will benefit the Government. They can probably still get a way around selling their product very cheaply in order to get around below-cost selling. At least we are taking steps to resolve the health problems as outlined by Alcohol Action Ireland. We are trying to be responsible and help in some way towards better controlling the alcohol sector.
