Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform

Bank Charges: Discussion with Central Bank and ISME

4:30 pm

Mr. Bernard Sheridan:

All submissions will be fully considered as part of the current consultation process. There is no doubt that we are trying to make the categorisation of co-operating and non-co-operating lenders and borrowers clearer. We are trying to protect those who are not co-operating before they are too far gone. They need to be notified in advance that they are to be deemed as non-co-operating, advised of what they need to do to be designated as co-operating and made aware of the implications of all eventualities. The Deputy is right when he suggests that the potential exists for non-co-operating borrowers who have not made a strategic decision not to co-operate to be affected by this. We need to look at that very carefully to make sure it does not happen. Basically, I am saying we will consider what the Deputy has said.
