Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation

ICT Skills Report: Discussion

2:05 pm

Mr. Joe Cunningham:

Maths and science are incredibly important. As Mr. O'Sullivan said, we are looking for thinkers, people we can mould and who have a broad set of skills. In the case of medicine, one does not begin with studying to become a dermatologist or an orthopaedic surgeon; rather, one spends six years in general medicine and then proceeds to specialisation. It is no different in industry with regard to engineering or computer science. We can mould people with a broad initial education.
