Freedom of Information (Amendment) Bill 2012: Discussion
9:45 am
Mr. Séamus Dooley:
I gave Irish Water as an example and the process would not be exclusive. There is also a union concern with regard to privatisation. With Irish Water and EirGrid, the view permeating the thinking of recent years has been maximising the amount of confidentiality. The legislation as drafted allows for commercial sensitivities. I deal with RTE, although I am not a spokesman, and it is covered by the Freedom of Information Act. The issue of commercial sensitivity has regularly arisen with requests but the legislation is there to deal with it. There is also an appeal mechanism. The exclusions that currently exist concern us.
