I do not wish to rehearse matters with which the committee has already dealt. However, there are one or two issues on which I wish to focus. The Department and the FSAI employed DNA testing for the first time in 2012. I presume this was not done on a whim but was rather based on the assumption that there may have been an issue. If one considers the official figures for horses that are being slaughtered legally for their meat in this country - albeit for the export market - one can see that they increased sixfold from approximately 2,000 in 2008 to around 12,000 in 2011.
