The committee has received notice of a proposal, COM (2012) 617, for scrutiny. This is a proposal for a regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on a fund for European aid to the most deprived, which will replace the current EU food distribution programme for the most deprived people of the Community. The Commissioner has proposed a budget of €2.5 billion for the fund for the period 2014 to 2020. Negotiations on the proposed measure are only at the initial stage and other member states have expressed subsidiarity concerns regarding it.

The proposal has been deemed to warrant further scrutiny by this committee. I propose that we request officials from the lead Department to appear before the committee next week to explain the proposal fully. This will assist the committee in its scrutiny, at which point we can decide whether we wish to take further action. Is that agreed? Agreed.
