Select Committee on Transport
Estimates for Public Services 2025
Vote 31 - Transport (Supplementary)
2:00 am
Louis O'Hara (Galway East, Sinn Fein)
My time is getting quite short so I will move on. Rail has been mentioned at this committee a lot of times. We have capacity issues on rail services across the State, particularly in my constituency with rail services in and out of Galway. There are huge capacity issues on many of the peak services. Some of them have only two carriages, for example the 7.49 a.m. service each morning from Limerick via Athenry to Galway. The issue is that we have new carriages coming on the DART line that will allow the older diesel carriages to go to the regional routes, but we are talking about 2027 before that is scheduled to happen. People in my constituency who are being left behind on the platform and crowded and jammed into unsafe carriages cannot wait for two years or more for those improvements and additional capacity on these services. Is that something the Department is looking at and engaging with Irish Rail on? Is there any way to accelerate that process to get new carriages in place quicker?
