Select Committee on Transport
Estimates for Public Services 2025
Vote 31 - Transport (Supplementary)
2:00 am
Jerry Buttimer (Cork South-Central, Fine Gael)
If the Deputy lets me finish, I am going to make the point and I am not going to have an argument because we share a common goal in terms of the Department and we in government getting people onto public transport. Under the previous Government, there was a commitment in relation to the 2:1 ratio in favour of new public transport infrastructure over new roads. The point I would make to the Deputy is the fact that this NDP has a funding ratio of at least 2:1 in favour of new public transport over new roads. That is a fact. That has not changed. That is a reality. What we need to continue to do is ensure that we deliver on our transport commitments. As I said earlier, we are ambitious around public transport. It has worked and it is working, notwithstanding the challenges we do have and that are experienced by people. However, the provision of public transport services is a commitment of the Government. We have seen it across the country. I disagree with the Deputy in terms of the interpretation he has of the plan. The M50 piece last night on "Prime Time" illustrated the importance of getting BusConnects and delivering on our various rail projects. I am going to dovetail into other parts of the country here, particularly Cork, and Deputy O'Hara mentioned Galway. We need to make sure people are not stuck in traffic and that they have better public transport. That is for the Government to address in this regard.
