Estimates for Public Services 2025
Vote 32 - Enterprise, Tourism and Employment (Supplementary)

Peter Burke (Longford-Westmeath, Fine Gael)
First, it is in relation to Fáilte Ireland, not Tourism Ireland. Tourism Ireland is doing exceptional work. There is a challenge with Fáilte Ireland at the moment. It currently has a new chief executive who has taken over, Caroline Bocquel, who will be exceptional for the sector. It is not ideal at a time when tourism is under pressure that there is a State agency that has not fulfilled its obligation with schemes and brought forward enough projects to ensure it is developing and promoting our domestic brand. I assure the Deputy it will not happen again. I took over midway through the year. The legislation was put through in about June where the Department got control over the tourism brief. We have brought in new key performance indicators. We have brought in targets for the sector over the next five years on how we are going to grow revenue, visitor numbers and develop significant career pathways in our tourism sector, which will be critical. We are going to be looking at the less mature markets we have in our country. We will hopefully get a minimum of 7% growth per annum and ensure that this will not happen again. It is something that I am not happy with. I am quite frankly very annoyed by it, but it is something we will rectify. On the management of Fáilte Ireland, we need more structure. We need more strategic direction. It is going to be managed differently now it is under my Department than it was heretofore. I assure the Deputy of that.
