Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish Speaking Community

Úsáid agus Infheictheacht na Gaeilge ar na Meáin Chraolta: Plé

Mr. Kevin Bakhurst:

I would like to assure the Deputy in that regard, in accordance with our strategic framework, as long as we get the funding. There are a couple of things I would like to point out about that. Firstly, we said very clearly for the first time in a strategy document that Raidió na Gaeltachta is one of absolute priorities as an organisation. The second thing is that there are plans for providing either a radio station or audio content to younger audiences. That is in there and is being worked through. I have to say that we have had some representations from people who are already in that space saying that they do not need Raidió na Gaeltachta to get into that space. I think the other consideration for us is that given where younger audiences are now, as opposed to 20 years ago, much of their consumption is not through linear radio stations but through podcasts and other material like that. We need to work out the best way of providing Irish-language audio content to young audiences. It may involve a radio station, a combination of a radio station and podcasts, or more podcasts. It is absolutely in the strategy about how we address younger audiences with Irish-language content. It depends on funding.
