Mr. Donald Ewing:
To get an accurate figure, we would have to ask the relevant agency, the National Educational Psychological Service, NEPS. However, from anecdotal evidence, we often hear from principals and parents that there are two or three per medium-sized primary school per year. That puts principals in an unenviable position in which they have to prioritise children with a whole range of needs, some of which we accept are far more severe and in need of assessment than a young person with dyslexia. The reality is that parents often have to pay for it privately. I am okay with parents paying privately for skiing or riding lessons, but I do not think it is a great system where parents have to pay to have an additional need, which affects their reading and writing, assessed.
