Committee on Budgetary Oversight

Fiscal Assessment Report: Irish Fiscal Advisory Council

Mr. Sebastian Barnes:

I will come back to the Deputy's second question. On the question of the impact, a big and sudden adjustment would obviously be very disruptive. That is a relatively unlikely scenario to happen in that way, but this is one of the major pressures in the context of the public finances. It is, however, more of an issue that can be handled gradually, if it is well managed. That is why it is important that this issue should be managed in a gradual way and that is why we are advocating for a gradual unwinding of the reliance on corporation tax. I ask Dr. Casey to fill in some details on the economic side.
