Joint Standing Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands

Seirbhísí trí Ghaeilge (Atógáil): An Roinn Talmhaíochta, Bia agus Mara

Mr. Padraig McMahon:

The Deputy's point is certainly well made. Our approach has been quite blunt. We have put these inspectors in areas where there are Gaeltachtaí and Irish speakers on the basis of the statistical chance that they will then deal with someone who wants to receive these services through Irish. That is completely different from the targeted approach the Deputy is suggesting. We will have to look into how we do it. As I have said, the way we do it is very blunt. We ensure there is an inspector in an area where this requirement is most likely to be called on. That is how we are doing it at the moment with the resources we have. We will take the Deputy's point back to the Department.
