I cannot conclude without asking the witnesses whether they think the culture in the banks has changed. They will be familiar with the geography of Mayo, where there is often a 50-mile round trip to nearest bank, but I was alarmed to hear of a story over Christmas of someone who went to their own bank to take money out, only to be told they could not do so and would have to come back another day between certain times. That does not suggest a change of culture or banks that are consumer-led. Does it worry the witnesses that "customers" is almost a dirty word for banks now? The banks do not want customers in rural areas going to their tellers.
