Committee on Budgetary Oversight

Ex-ante Scrutiny of Budget 2018: Nevin Economic Research Institute, Irish Congress of Trade Unions, Irish Tax Institute and Chambers Ireland

9:00 am

Ms Cora O'Brien:

I absolutely agree. The UK has a very good and rounded tax policy for SMEs and it encompasses the seed investment fund to which the Deputy referred. It would be a good idea to have something on the seed investment side. That might be done as part of an overall review of the current employment investment incentive that is currently in place. The UK has a 20% capital gains tax rate so the authorities there know that if they want to generate this activity, more money will accrue to Exchequer not by having a high rate but by having a low rate.
