Covid-19 Pandemic Supports

188. To ask the Minister for Health if he will reconsider classifying Covid-19 as an occupational illness, as has been recommended in many EU countries; what supports are in place for people who were in receipt of special leave with pay due to long-Covid; what will replace this payment for front-line workers who are still unable to return to work; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The temporary Special Scheme to provide special leave with pay for eligible staff in respect of Long Covid that was in place between July 2022 and 31st March this year, has now concluded.

Any employee of the public health sector impacted by the conclusion of that Scheme who remains unwell may utilise the full provisions of the Public Service Sick Leave Scheme which will provide further support.

The sick leave scheme provides full pay for three months, followed by half pay for three months, and after that, Temporary Rehabilitative Remuneration may be applied for, which, if granted, provides up to a further 547 days of paid leave. The Critical Illness Protocol that forms part of the sick leave scheme may also provide additional supports if granted.

The EU recommendation in respect of the classification of Covid-19 as an occupational illness is a matter for my colleague, the Minister for Social Protection.
