To ask the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade if he is aware that the person accused of the rape and murder of an Irish citizen (details supplied) in India in March 2017 has again been granted bail; and the engagements the Government has had with the Indian Government on the length of time this trial has taken. I wish to thank the Deputy for raising this case. First, and foremost, my thoughts are naturally with the family concerned. This is an extremely tragic case and I commend the family for their resilience and determination in seeking justice. I appreciate that this has not been an easy period for them and understand their frustration with the ongoing delays.
I want to assure the Deputy that my Department remains in regular contact with the family. Achieving a timely and just conclusion of the case is a priority for my Department and we continue to work with all relevant stakeholders on this case.
Officials in our Consulate remain actively engaged locally on the case and continue to seek updates and to raise the concerns of the family.
I can assure the Deputy that my Department will continue to support the family throughout this process.
