Animal Breeding Regulations

485. To ask the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine the regulations in cases in which a small number of turkeys are kept for domestic personal use in terms of killing birds for domestic use on such farms. [42147/19]

While the provisions of Regulation 853/2004 laying down specific hygiene rules for food of animal origin and Regulation 1099/2009 on the protection of animals at the time of killing do not apply to domestic use and slaughter of poultry for domestic consumption, the provisions of the Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013 do apply. 

Anyone who keeps poultry in Ireland must register their premises with my Department. This is a legal requirement under Irish law.  Flock owners should therefore be registered with their local Regional Veterinary Office (RVO) as a backyard flock.
