To ask the Minister for Defence the numbers of supernumerary positions in his Department, and those agencies, organisations or bodies funded by his Department; the maximum period in each case that supernumerary positions have existed; the total cost in maintaining supernumerary positions; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The Defence Organisation includes civil servants, military personnel, and civilian employees attached to military installations. The current Defence Forces strength is below the authorised figure of 9,500. Notwithstanding this, there are five temporary supernumerary positions within the ranks outlined in the following table.
