Firstly I would like to explain that the improvement and maintenance of regional and local roads, in its area, is a statutory function of each road authority in accordance with the provisions of section 13 of the Roads Act, 1993.  Works on such roads are a matter for the relevant local authority to be funded from its own resources supplemented by State road grants. Arising from the introduction of the Local Property Tax and the Government commitment that local authorities will retain 80% of the tax revenues, South Dublin County Council became self funding under the main road grant categories from 2015.

As regards decisions on investment for new Strategic projects, this is wholly dependent on the availability of additional funding for my Department.
