The provision and allocation of Garda resources, including transport, is a matter for the Garda Commissioner in the context of his operational priorities and available finance. I am advised by the Garda authorities that Garda patrol cars are retired for a variety of reasons including, on safety grounds, having reached an odometer reading of 300,000 kilometres. I am further informed that provision has been made in the Garda Vote for 2012 to acquire new Garda vehicles which will be deployed by the Garda authorities in accordance with An Garda SÃochána's identified policing requirements across all Garda Divisions.
