Question 55: To ask the Minister for Education and Skills when a secondary school (details supplied) in County Carlow will receive funding to construct a sports hall, in view of the fact that it is the only secondary school in County Carlow without such a facility and that it was first applied for ten years ago. I can confirm that the school referred to by the Deputy submitted an application for large scale capital funding for the provision of a Sports Hall to my Department. The application has been assessed in accordance with the published prioritisation criteria for large scale capital projects and has been assigned a Band 4 rating. The progression of all large scale building projects, including a project for this school, from initial design stage through to construction phase will be considered in the context of my Department's multi-annual School Building and Modernisation Programme and the available financial resources with due regard to the demand for increased education provision at both primary and post primary level in the coming years.

The Deputy will be aware that the most recent projections are forecasting a substantial increase in enrolments at both primary and post primary level in the coming years. The delivery of new schools, together with extension projects to meet the increase in demand, will be the main focus for capital investment in schools in the coming years. Information in respect of the current school building programme along with all assessed applications for major capital works, including the proposed project for this school, is available on the Department's website at www.education.ie.
