Question 430: To ask the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs if she will give details of the number of vocational education committee youth officers employed by the VECs; the list of current or amalgamated VECs employing youth officers; the vacancies that exist in these positions, for example, staff leaving, maternity leave, sick leave and so on; if vacancies in these positions will be filled and the timescales for same; the savings that will accrue from vacancies and positions not being filled; the way any savings that result from such vacancies might be applied; and if she will make a statement on the matter. I propose to take Questions Nos. 430 and 436 together.
The table shows the number of Youth Officers employed in VECs and details of where vacancies exist. Under the current embargo on recruitment in the public service, no post in the public sector, however arising, may be filled by recruitment or promotion. Due to the current vacancies, it is expected that there will be savings in the region of â¬100,000. This amount is being utilised in the overall Youth Affairs budget to support the provision of services to young people.
