In the context of current constraints on the public capital programme and the reduction in new social housing supply, returning vacant stock to use, in as short a time as possible, continues to be a major priority for my Department under the Social Housing Improvement Programme. A key objective of the programme is to maximise the number of vacant units which can be brought back into use at reasonable cost. This will apply to both casual vacancies and long-term voids.

Based on information provided by local authorities throughout the country, and with regard to the funding available, an allocation of €5.5million has been provided to Dublin City Council for the Energy Efficiency/Voids programme in 2011. 25% of this has already been paid to the Council.

A further €24 million has been allocated to Dublin City Council under its social housing improvement works programme covering regeneration and remedial works. My Department remains committed to funding of improvement works throughout the City Council area having regard to available resources and competing demands.
