Question 362: To ask the Minister for Education and Science if he will reconsider an application for a home tuition grant in respect of a person (details supplied) in County Galway who suffers from a profound brain injury, epilepsy and who requires home tuition in view of the fact that they are unable to attend a special needs school due to the severity of their condition; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The Deputy will be aware that the home tuition scheme provides a grant to parents to facilitate the provision of education at home for children who, for a number of reasons such as chronic illness, are unable to attend school. The scheme was extended in recent years to facilitate tuition for children awaiting an educational placement and provide early education intervention for pre-school children with autism.
On the basis of the information provided in an application for home tuition last year, the child in question was not eligible for home tuition as he had the option of an appropriate school placement at that time. There is no record of an application for home tuition in respect of this year.
