Question 56: To ask the Minister for Transport the reason he has not liaised with the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment to request the National Consumer Agency, the Competition Authority and the Commission on Aviation Regulation to initiate an urgent investigation into the series of new extra charges on airline passengers; if he will bring forward legislation specifically to protect consumers of airline services; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The market for air services in the Community was liberalized in the 1990s. The internal market has removed all commercial restrictions for airlines flying within the EU, such as restrictions on the routes, the number of flights or the setting of fares. Under the provisions of Council Regulation (EEC) No. 2409/92 Community air carriers can freely set their air fares.

The broader issue of consumer protection legislation falls within the remit of my colleague the Minister for Enterprise Trade and Employment.
