Question 428: To ask the Minister for Education and Science the reason all the students (details supplied) who were transferred to a neighbouring national school when their existing school was closed by her Department were not provided with school transport when their parents were given assurances at meetings that took place prior to the closure that transport would be provided for all of the pupils to the new school. Where a school is closed and amalgamated with another, children for whom the closed school would have been their nearest had it remained open, are eligible for free transport to the school of amalgamation.

Bus Éireann, which operates the school transport service on behalf of my Department, has advised that the family listed at number 1 in the details attached is not eligible for transport as the 'closed school' was not the nearest to their place of residence. The second family mentioned in the details attached should liaise with the local Bus Éireann office regarding their eligibility for school transport.
