Question 196: To ask the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government if his attention has been drawn to the fact that there has been recent significant interruptions in the water supply to the town of Rathangan, County Kildare; the level of investment by his Department to date in augmenting the water supply to Rathangan; his views on the fact that despite this level of investment the necessary additional supply has not been commissioned by Kildare County Council; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Phase 1 of the Kildare Water Strategy â Wellfield Contract â is being funded under my Department's Water Services Investment Programme 2005-2007 and provides for the development of groundwater sources at a number of locations, including Rathangan. My Department has to date recouped â¬12.4 million to Kildare County Council in respect of the works which I understand are substantially completed in the case of Rathangan. While the commissioning of the new infrastructure is a matter for Kildare County Council, the Council has submitted proposals to my Department for additional works to be undertaken prior to commissioning to reduce the hardness of the water supplied to consumers. The proposals are being examined as quickly as possible and I expect a response to be conveyed to the Council shortly.
