Question 149: To ask the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources if he will issue direction or instruction in regard to the future of the postal service with particular reference to the need to retain the optimum number of post offices and sub-post offices, sufficiently and strategically located to meet the service requirements and competition in the future; and if he will make a statement on the matter. While the Programme for Government clearly sets out this Government's commitment to the objective of securing the largest, most economically sustainable nationwide post office network possible, decisions made in regard to the retention of the optimum number of post offices are for the Board and management of An Post to make. I have no statutory function in regard to this matter.
